Communicating with families

My new SMART goal for the year is to increase how often I communicate with the families of my students. Not only will the communication involve student progress, but also information regarding what is being taught and study skills for that chapter to incorporate at home. I hope to communicate  to a minimum of 5 families a week regarding progress and each of my 5 classes regarding study skills. I have 5 classes that I will be teaching this year. This gives me time to focus on at least one student from each class that may need the extra help.

I chose to make this my SMART goal for the year because I found myself avoiding this part of my professional responsibility last year. Many times communication only happened when a student did something wrong or a major issue had to be addressed. I want to extend communication past failing/problem students and include all of my students. I believe that communicating more with families will be one way to help keep the students in my classroom on task and focused more.
